Eric Hobsbawm (1917–2012) was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and raised in Vienna and Berlin, where he witnessed the Nazi rise to power as a teenager before moving to Britain. He remained a lifelong member of the British Communist Party and became one of the most influential historians of the twentieth century.
His best-known work is a four-volume series spanning more than a hundred years — reorganizing the two centuries from 1789 to 1991 into a periodization still widely used today.
You'll now walk through that same timeline — but first, guess how he might have divided it up.
1789–1848
The Age of Revolution: A Dual Revolution
Hobsbawm argued that the modern world was born from two revolutions happening almost simultaneously:
A political revolution — the French Revolution of 1789, which delivered "liberty, equality, fraternity" and nationalism. An economic revolution — Britain's Industrial Revolution, which delivered factories, the steam engine, and capitalist production.
He called their combination the "dual revolution" — political and economic power seized by the bourgeoisie at the same time, marking the true starting point of the "modern" world.
Because Hobsbawm insisted on explaining history through social and economic structures, not just political events or great men. France gave the world a political vocabulary; Britain gave it economic momentum — together they produced a modern society dominated by the bourgeoisie.
1848–1875
The Age of Capital: Bourgeois Triumph
After a wave of revolutions swept Europe in 1848 and failed just as quickly, Hobsbawm saw this as the moment working-class revolution retreated and the bourgeoisie fully consolidated its grip on economics and politics.
Railways, joint-stock companies, and a world market expanded explosively in this period — capitalism became, for the first time, a truly global mode of production.
Colonies and agrarian regions dragged into the global market with no bargaining power of their own. Hobsbawm kept reminding readers that this so-called "age of progress" distributed its prosperity in deeply unequal ways.
1875–1914
The Age of Empire: Nationalism and Colonial Expansion
In its search for new markets and raw materials, capitalism dragged the entire planet into competition — European powers carved up Africa and Asia, while nationalist sentiment was mobilized at home by politicians seeking mass support.
Hobsbawm was especially interested in how nationalism was manufactured and deployed as a political tool during this period — a thread that leads directly into his most famous theory.
In 1983, Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger co-edited The Invention of Tradition, arguing that many national traditions we assume are ancient were in fact consciously invented and standardized in the late 19th century to manufacture identity and historical legitimacy for new nation-states.
1914–1991
The Age of Extremes: The Short Twentieth Century
In his final volume, Hobsbawm made a bold claim: the real "20th century" didn't run from 1900 to 2000, but from the outbreak of World War I in 1914 to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 — the "short twentieth century."
He divided those 77 years into three acts: • The Age of Catastrophe (1914–1945) — two world wars, the Great Depression, fascism • The Golden Age (1945–1973) — postwar reconstruction and economic boom • The Landslide (1973–1991) — erosion of the Cold War order, ending in Soviet collapse
This framework remains one of the most frequently cited periodizations of 20th-century world history.
Looking back
Putting it all together
1️⃣ Explains history through economic structure, not just politics and great men (Marxist method)
2️⃣ Proposed two periodizations — the long 19th century (1789–1914) and the short 20th century (1914–1991)
3️⃣ "The invention of tradition" — many national traditions were constructed in the modern era
4️⃣ Championed "history from below", centering people left out of mainstream narratives
Now try a few quick questions to check your understanding — get one wrong and that's fine too, the answer will explain why.

Three books worth reading next
1. The Age of Extremes: The Short Twentieth Century, 1914–1991 (1994) Hobsbawm's most widely read book and the capstone of his four-volume series. It tells the story of the two world wars, the Cold War, and the Soviet collapse through his "short twentieth century" framework — the most natural entry point into his thinking as a whole.
2. The Invention of Tradition (co-edited with Terence Ranger, 1983) A collection of essays with concrete, memorable case studies (Scottish kilts, British royal ceremony) — the most accessible way to first encounter the idea that "tradition" can be a modern construction. A staple in cultural history and nationalism studies.
3. Interesting Times: A Twentieth-Century Life (2002) Hobsbawm's autobiography, tracing his life from Weimar-era Berlin through Cambridge to becoming a Marxist historian. It helps readers see where his politics and historical method came from — and reads far more easily than his academic monographs.
Suggested order: start with The Age of Extremes for the big picture, then The Invention of Tradition to grasp his core theoretical method, and finish with the autobiography to connect the ideas back to the man.
